Amritsar meaning the holy pool of nectar is a major city in Punjab. It is believed that the
sons of Lord Ram Luv and Kush were educated here. This city was founded by the fourth guru
of the Sikhs Guru Ramdev and has then become the symbol of Sikhism. The most popular
tourist destination and the holiest gurudwara of the Sikh religion is the golden temple which is
surrounded by the sacred Amrit Sarovar lake.
The Golden Temple
The holiest place of worship of Sikhs is a gurudwara built around a man-made made
pool which is believed to purify us from the accumulated karma. The Gold plated temple is the most important place of pilgrimage and has withstood the test of time with multiple rebuilds the latest one resulting in the gold plating. The scripture Adi Granth was placed in the sanctum by the Guru Arjan the fifth guru of Sikhism.

A premier temple for the chief goddess Durga is defied and worshipped here along with goddess Lakshmi and god Vishnu. The temple, close to the railway station and the bus station, is of great importance in the Hindu scripture Ramayan. The sale of tobacco, liquor and meat is restricted in and around the city.
